March 27, 2025 — Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) is proactively enhancing security protocols in response to a recent national advisory issued by the American Hospital Association (AHA) and Health-ISAC (Information Sharing and Analysis Center). The advisory references an unconfirmed social media post indicating the possibility of a coordinated, multi-city terrorist threat targeting hospitals in the coming weeks.
At this time, there are no known threats to ARH facilities. However, out of an abundance of caution, Paul Buta, ARH AVP of Security Operations, said ARH has reviewed and reinforced all security and emergency preparedness procedures. ARH leadership is also in active communication with local and federal law enforcement to stay informed and prepared.
“We understand how concerning this type of information can be, and we want our patients, employees, and communities to know that we are taking every precaution to ensure their safety,” Buta says. “We are treating this advisory with the seriousness it warrants. Our teams are on heightened alert, our safety protocols have been reinforced, and we’re actively collaborating with law enforcement to stay ahead of any potential threats.”
ARH encourages staff and community members to stay alert for any unusual or suspicious activity around its facilities and to report concerns immediately to hospital staff or law enforcement authorities. Individuals are also asked to cooperate with enhanced security measures, such as limited facility entry points and an increased on-site security presence. Everyone is urged to remain informed and follow any additional guidance provided by ARH’s security team.
Buta said ARH remains committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its patients, staff, and communities. The organization will continue to monitor developments and share updates as necessary.
