Lexington, Ky. – Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) has appointed tenured healthcare executive Susan Roman Carmical to the position of Vice President of Service Line Operations for the multi-hospital healthcare system
In her new role, Carmical will be responsible for clearly defining and delineating ARH service line structures and functions as well as achieving operational, financial and clinical excellence across ARH service lines. She will grow existing service lines and develop new service lines and in collaboration with senior and community leadership teams, and she will integrate service lines across the continuum of care.
“Susan has such exceptional leadership skills and her expertise in service line operations will help move ARH forward, especially during this pandemic. We truly are fortunate to have Susan return to ARH,” said ARH President and CEO Hollie Harris Phillips.
Carmical has been a healthcare executive for 21 years with seven of those years at ARH. In 2001, she served as Assistant Administrator at Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center where she administered all aspects of daily operations for Support Services. Carmical was appointed Community Chief Executive Officer (CCEO) at Morgan County ARH Hospital in 2004, where she provided leadership for the critical care access hospital, home health agency, HomeCare Store and two clinics. In 2006, Carmical served as CCEO at Middlesboro ARH Hospital and provided leadership for a 96-bed acute care hospital, home health agency, ARH multi-specialty clinic and the HomeCare Store. For the past 11 years, Carmical served as the Area Director of Operations at CommonSpirit Health, VNA Health at Home –Lexington and London Branches, providing leadership in all aspects of daily operations for Central Kentucky post-acute/transitions of care services that included skilled nursing, rehabilitation services and hospice.
Carmical received her Master of Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va. and completed her Bachelor of Arts, Health Science and Policy, with a concentration in health administration, from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Md.
Carmical is a fellow member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and a board member of the ACHE Chapter Committee & Kentucky Regent Advisory Council and Trilogy Healthcare.
During her tenure, Carmical has received these notable honors: CommonSpirit Health, Excellence in Operational Leadership Award in 2020; CommonSpirit Health, Branch of the Year (Home Care & Hospice in 2017, 2018 and 2020; Business and Professional Women’s Club, Vice President/Woman of the Year in 2008 and ACHE Regent’s Award for Young Healthcare Executive of the Year in 2004.
